Apples new AppStore Review Guidelines might put an end to Podcaster

Yesterday Apple announced new rules for the app store and we want to just mention several that might put a stop to future Podcaster development.

8.5 Use of protected 3rd party material (trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, otherwise proprietary content) requires a documented rights check which must be provided upon request

This has already affected the the directory in the app. We had to remove the feeds that Apple asked us and move them out of the app to http://podcaster.fm/search.aspx.

9.2 App user interfaces that mimic any iPod interface will be rejected

We made out Now Playing screen look similar to Apples iPod screen because people are familiar with the control. We have several icons and buttons that Apple does not have so maybe it's enough of a difference.

9.3 Audio streaming content over a cellular network may not use more than 5MB over 5 minutes
9.4 Video streaming content over a cellular network longer than 10 minutes must use HTTP Live Streaming and include a baseline 64 kbps audio-only HTTP Live stream
Our app allows users to stream content and if Apple makes us stop streaming, it will make a lot of users unhappy. This will not affect anyone that download the feeds over 3G.

We are not sure how much has changed from the previous rules so we might be able to get away with it but it's still a  guessing game. We currently have Podcaster 3.5 in review so we should have an answer by end of next week.

  2. Argh! Having allowed these things through, why change the rules now?

You'd almost believe they were planning to offer wireless iTunes syncing with a cloud based system or something.

  3. Apple should pay to license podcaster from you, and build it into itunes. Your app is a significant over the native podcast behavior.

  5. @Jonathan - Won't happen. Apple probably couldn't care less about podcasts, no money in it for them. In fact, they probably make more money by allowing these guys to sell it, because they get 30%. ;)

  6. I have a "real" app store version. Might have to look into the Cydia version, hate to buy the same app twice but what are ya gonna do...

  7. Bit defeatist!

8.5 - can you build in a basic browser to use the website podcast search?

9.2 - be a shame to waste all that work but there's other UIs if it came to it.

9.3/9.4 - understand it would annoy some people, but not your fault.

So may have to change direction slightly but can't see any reasons that it would stop development.

  8. Not sure if this is what Stuart Test was implying but can't you move the podcast directory to an online catalog? Point users to that website for searching and have then copy and paste the feeds back into the app... Sucks I know but it is an option.

  10. Oh nice, I see there is an update! I am trying to decide if to update or not, did apple allow streaming videos and audio over 3g? I would not want to lose that.....

  11. to save a previous versin, just find the .ipa on your harddrive and copy it to a new location. Then you can drag it back to itunes at any time to install it.

  12. When I could apparently not add the BBC OPML directory myself on a slow connection abroad (Apple guidelines prevent BBC being supplied as a Provider with the app ?!?) I was advised by Podcaster support that it could not be technically done. Got home to UK and found it COULD but takes 5 hours (while with my old Nokia the same action took 20 mins).

All working now (though I cannot browse by BBC station as I can on my Nokia - only in one long list). Why can't I go forwards and backwards within a Podcast and see the elapsed time? is that ANOTHER Apple restriction?
